How to Use Syringes for Insulin Delivery
Before injecting insulin with a syringe, you’ll need to:
- Collect your supplies. You should have insulin, syringes, needles, alcohol wipes, and a disposal container.
- Know what insulin type you use. The markings on an average insulin syringe measure standard (or U-100) insulin. If you use another type of insulin, you might have to follow different dosage instructions.
- Check your insulin’s expiration date. Diabetes patients should never use expired insulin.
Getting Started:
Step 1: To fill your syringe with a single type of insulin, roll your insulin vial between your hands to mix it (if it isn’t already clear). Then, clean the top of the vial and use your syringe to draw an amount of air that is equivalent to your insulin dose.
Step 2: Next, inject this air into the vial, turn it upside down with the needle inside, and draw an insulin dose. If you notice any air bubbles, tap or flick the syringe to remove them.
Step 3: At this point, you’re ready to make an insulin injection. Once you’ve chosen an injection site, pinch the skin there and insert your needle at a 45-degree angle.
Step 4: Push the needle deep into the skin, let go, and slowly inject the insulin in your syringe. Finally, leave the needle in place for five seconds before pulling it out.
What Should You Know About Insulin Syringe Sizes?
Insulin syringes aren’t a “one-size-fits-all” product. Instead, your insulin syringe should have a barrel size that holds your entire insulin dose.
Here’s a list of common insulin syringe sizes and the insulin units these syringes can hold:
- 0.3 mL: Less than 30 units of insulin
- 0.5 mL: 30-50 units of insulin
- 1.0 mL: More than 50 units of insulin
