How to Use Syringes for Insulin Delivery

Before injecting insulin with a syringe, you’ll need to:

  • Collect your supplies. You should have insulin, syringes, needles, alcohol wipes, and a disposal container.
  • Know what insulin type you use. The markings on an average insulin syringe measure standard (or U-100) insulin. If you use another type of insulin, you might have to follow different dosage instructions.
  • Check your insulin’s expiration date. Diabetes patients should never use expired insulin.

Getting Started:

Step 1: To fill your syringe with a single type of insulin, roll your insulin vial between your hands to mix it (if it isn’t already clear). Then, clean the top of the vial and use your syringe to draw an amount of air that is equivalent to your insulin dose.

Step 2: Next, inject this air into the vial, turn it upside down with the needle inside, and draw an insulin dose. If you notice any air bubbles, tap or flick the syringe to remove them.

Step 3: At this point, you’re ready to make an insulin injection. Once you’ve chosen an injection site, pinch the skin there and insert your needle at a 45-degree angle.

Step 4: Push the needle deep into the skin, let go, and slowly inject the insulin in your syringe. Finally, leave the needle in place for five seconds before pulling it out.

What Should You Know About Insulin Syringe Sizes?

Insulin syringes aren’t a “one-size-fits-all” product. Instead, your insulin syringe should have a barrel size that holds your entire insulin dose.

Insulin-Syringes

Here’s a list of common insulin syringe sizes and the insulin units these syringes can hold:

  • 0.3 mL: Less than 30 units of insulin
  • 0.5 mL: 30-50 units of insulin
  • 1.0 mL: More than 50 units of insulin

As for syringe length, you can get accurate insulin doses from needles as short as 4 mm. Shorter needles and needles with thinner gauges may reduce the pain associated with insulin delivery.

Can You Reuse Insulin Syringe Needles?

If you want to cut down on diabetes supply costs, you may have thought about reusing syringes for insulin delivery. However, insulin syringe manufacturers do not recommend using these products more than once.

You should never reuse insulin syringe needles if you have:

  • Low infection resistance
  • Open wounds
  • Vision problems
  • Any type of illness
A pile of empty insulin syringes is shown against a white background.

Even if you don’t have these health problems, you need to talk to your healthcare team before reusing syringes. If you choose to use syringes multiple times, be sure to:

  • Keep your needle’s cap on when you aren’t using it
  • Prevent other people from reusing your syringes
  • Not let your syringe’s needle touch anything other than your skin and the top of your insulin bottle

Tips on Safe Insulin Syringe Disposal

If you don’t dispose of syringes after a single use, you should get rid of your syringe when its needle:

  • Gets bent
  • Becomes dull
  • Touches something it shouldn’t

The safest way to dispose of syringes is to clip their needles off. You should never use scissors for this task—if the needle goes flying, it could get lost or hurt someone. Instead, use a device that can clip, catch, and store your used needle.

If you can’t destroy your needles, start the disposal process by recapping them. Then, place your needles or full syringes in a plastic/metal box or an opaque, heavy-duty plastic bottle. This container should not be recycled and should not let needles break through.

Since used insulin syringes are a form of medical waste, you may need to follow local rules while disposing of these items. Contact your city/county waste authority or refuse company for more information on proper syringe disposal.
