If you or your loved ones are living with diabetes, chances are you’ve heard of Dexcom. One of the most popular continuous glucose monitor (CGM) providers, Dexcom currently offers two CGMs—the G6 and G7. Each of these systems function similarly, but the G7 comes with some major improvements. Learn more with US MED’s breakdown of the differences between Dexcom G6 vs. G7.
Dexcom Overview
Dexcom improved the lives of many when they launched their first continuous glucose monitor, the G6, in 2018. CGMs work by tracking blood sugar levels in real time using a wearable sensor and transmitter. They transmit blood glucose readings to the user’s smartphone and/or receiver, simplifying diabetes management and eliminating frequent finger stick tests. With real-time alerts, Dexcom helps prevent dangerous highs and lows, improving overall blood sugar control and reducing the risk of complications. In 2023, Dexcom released its newest CGM, the G7.
What is the Difference Between Dexcom G6 and G7?
With the success of the G6, Dexcom launched the G7, which features many improvements. There are a few key differences between Dexcom G6 and G7, including size, location of wear, alerts, and more. Keep reading to see how each system compares.
Dexcom G6 vs G7 Sensors
Some of the most noteworthy improvements made to the Dexcom G7 involve the system’s redesigned sensors. See how they compare below.
Size
The G7 sensors feature a round shape and are 60% smaller than G6 sensors. Each sensor is about the size of three stacked quarters. This makes them more comfortable and discreet.
Location of Wear
Due to their smaller size, you can wear G7 sensors in more locations on the body than those of the G6. Adult users may wear the G7 on the back of the upper arm, whereas G6 sensors must be worn on the abdomen. For children, the G6 can be worn on the upper buttocks for ages 2-17, while the G7 is worn on the upper buttocks for children ages 2-6.
Transmitters & Warm-Up Time
The G7 significantly improved its warm-up time. G7 sensors have a 30-minute warm-up time—the shortest of any CGM system on the market. Meanwhile, Dexcom G6 sensors take two hours to get ready for use. That means two hours without blood glucose monitoring alerts. CGM users quickly get accustomed to around-the-clock glucose reporting, therefore the shorter the warm-up period, the better. Going from two hours without reporting to only 30 minutes is a huge improvement.
Another exciting improvement is that G7 sensors have an all-in-one sensor and transmitter, so you don’t need to save your transmitter when it’s time to replace your sensor. G6 transmitters only last 90 days and you must manually put the transmitter in each time you change sensors. With the G7, you have less pieces of equipment and less steps to worry about when changing sensors.
Dexcom G6 vs G7 App
Both the Dexcom G6 and the Dexcom G7 are fully compatible with mobile apps. However, the G7 system’s app has been completely redesigned with a more user-friendly interface. The app for the new CGM also features Dexcom Clarity integration, making it much easier to use the Dexcom G7 with compatible smart devices.
Dexcom G6 vs G7 Accuracy
Along with making physical changes to its sensors, Dexcom took its accuracy to the next level when designing the Dexcom G7. Based on its MARD (mean absolute relative difference), the G7 is more accurate than any other CGM sold in the United States. A CGM’s MARD is shown as a percentage—the lower, the better. The Dexcom G7’s MARD is 8.2% (in adults wearing sensors on their upper arms), compared to 9% for the G6.
